The Review Process

Submission & editorial screening

All manuscripts undergo initial screening by the Editor-in-Chief within 5 working days. Manuscripts that do not meet scope, ethical, or formatting requirements are rejected at this stage without peer review.

Reviewer assignment

Manuscripts passing editorial screening are assigned to two independent peer reviewers with relevant expertise. Reviewers are selected from the editorial board and wider expert network. Suggested reviewers provided by authors may be considered but are not guaranteed.

Review period

Reviewers are requested to return their reports within 21 days. A single reminder is sent after 14 days. If a reviewer is unable to complete their review, an alternative reviewer is appointed.

Editorial decision

On receipt of reviewer reports, the Editor-in-Chief issues one of the following decisions: Accept; Minor revision; Major revision; Reject. The decision letter includes all reviewer comments.

Revision

Authors invited to revise their manuscript should submit a revised version with a point-by-point response to reviewer comments. Minor revisions should be returned within 4 weeks; major revisions within 8 weeks.

Final decision & publication

Accepted manuscripts proceed to copyediting, typesetting, and open-access publication. Authors will receive proofs for approval prior to final publication.

Expected Timelines

  • Editorial screening decision: within 5 working days
  • First peer review decision: within 6 weeks of submission
  • Decision on revised manuscript: within 4 weeks of resubmission
  • Publication after acceptance: within 4 weeks

 

Reviewer Guidance

Reviewers are asked to assess manuscripts on the following criteria:

  • Originality and significance of the contribution
  • Scientific rigour and validity of methodology
  • Accuracy and completeness of data presentation
  • Appropriateness of statistical analysis
  • Clarity and quality of writing
  • Relevance to the journal's scope
  • Ethical compliance

Reviewers should declare any conflicts of interest prior to accepting a review invitation. Reviewer reports are treated as confidential documents and must not be shared.

Misconduct

The journal takes publication misconduct seriously. Cases of suspected plagiarism, data fabrication, duplicate submission, or authorship fraud will be investigated in accordance with COPE guidelines.

Corrections and retractions

Corrections to published articles will be issued where errors are identified that do not affect the overall conclusions. Articles will be retracted where there is clear evidence of misconduct or unreliable data that invalidates the conclusions.

Appeals

Authors who wish to appeal an editorial decision should contact the Editor-in-Chief at editor@annalsofendocrinesurgery.org with a detailed written appeal. The Editor-in-Chief's decision on appeal is final.

 

Privacy policy

The names and email addresses entered in the AES journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party. The data collected from registered and non-registered users of this journal falls within the scope of the standard functioning of peer-reviewed journals. The journal’s editorial team collects such information only insofar as is necessary or appropriate to fulfill the purpose of the visitor’s interaction with the journal. It includes information that makes communication possible for the editorial process; it is used to inform readers about the authorship and editing of content and it enables collecting aggregated data on readership behaviors. Data that will assist in developing this publishing platform may be shared with its developer Public Knowledge Project in an anonymized and aggregated form, with appropriate exceptions such as article metrics. The data will not be sold by this journal or PKP nor will it be used for purposes other than those stated here. The authors published in this journal are responsible for the human subject data that figures in the research reported here. Those involved in editing this journal seek to be compliant with industry standards for data privacy, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provision for “data subject rights” that include (a) breach notification; (b) right of access; (c) the right to be forgotten; (d) data portability; and (e) privacy by design. The GDPR also allows for the recognition of “the public interest in the availability of the data,” which has a particular saliency for those involved in maintaining, with the greatest integrity possible, the public record of scholarly publishing.
